Kwick Millimeter Wave Imaging Systems
Concealed object detection is one of the greatest challenges facing security operations today. To detect concealed objects requires
more than metal detectors in today’s environment. There must be reliable ways to detect and identify non-metallic items or other
threatening objects that may be concealed under clothing. Millimeter wave (MMW) frequencies readily penetrate clothing, thus
allowing the detection of hidden objects.
What Metal Detectors Fails to Detect
- Cemtex Explosives
- TNT Explosives
- Liquid Nitro Glycerin Explosives
- The New Ceramic Guns
- The New Ceramic Knives
- Cocaine Powder Drugs
- Cash Money
- Technology Smuggling, PCB Boards/CDs
- Able to detect objects as small as 2” x 3

Why Millimeter Wave Technology
Millimeter Waves (MMW) describes a very high frequency range whose “wavelength” is on the order of a millimeter. MMW energy occurs naturally in objects (all material types) and environments and can be sensed accurately by specialized
equipment.
Clothing and similar materials are transparent at MMW frequencies and thus well-suited to MMW imaging for concealed object detection. Images can be collected in passive (listen only) or active mode. Passive imaging creates no concerns or perceptions regarding individual privacy and health

| Key Elements of Detection |
|
|
| |
|
|
| Contrast (Signal/Background Ratio) |
|
|
| |
|
|
- Body-to-surrounding environment temperature
difference (the higher the difference the better
the contrast)
- Concealed object-to-body contrast – This is a
function of temperature difference and emissivity
difference
- External interferences – A site survey will
minimize impact
|
|
| |
|
|
| Object Size |
|
|
- Larger objects are easier to detect
- Larger areas of contrast on the body (abdomen
versus legs) make detection easier
|
| Location of Concealed Object |
|
|
- Higher detection or lower false alarm
- Detection accuracy versus screening time
- Multiple cameras versus screening time
|
| Trade-offs |

- Walk-through or checkpoint screening
- Replaces pat down searches and hand wanding
- Detects all material types: Metals & Non-metals - powders, liquids, plastics, paper

Operational Scenarios
| |
| Walk-Through |
|
| |
|
| Walk-through screening allows real-time detection of
concealed objects while the subject transits through
the screening area. The detection can be non intrusive
where the passive system can be hidden
behind opaque walls. In this scenario, two passive
systems are recommended for better body coverage. |
| |
|
| |
| Cooperative Spot Screening |
| |
| Cooperative spot screening allows
random or systematic subject
screening for small concealed
objects. |
| |
|
| |
| Note: To maximize the efficiency, use walk-through metal detectors on entrance |
